The accession consists of two folders containing correspondence, memoranda, staff lists, reports and other records which document the establishment of the Marine Biology Research Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This material was originally filed under the heading "Marine Biology Historical and Reorganizational" in the files of the Marine Biology Research Division. The file includes a mimeographed document entitled, "Proposed Development of Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography," dated 15 August 1953 and signed and annotated by Adriano Buzzati-Traverso. It also includes course lists and curriculum planning material, lists of faculty and organizational charts. Material dated 1956-1960 includes several documents discussing the relationship of the SIO Division of Biology with the emerging UCSD Department of Biology. Several documents dated 1960 discuss the plan to build the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Fishery-Oceanography Center adjacent to the Scripps campus.
